cvt communities | Larchfield Community, Middlesbrough

AT LARCHFIELD COMMUNITY, on the edge of Middles-brough, we create new opportunities for adults with special needs through partnerships with the local community. Established in 1986, at the invitation of Middlesbrough Council, our farm-based community offers residential and day facilities for around 35 adults. In addition to a comfortable home life, we offer everyone the opportunity to develop and achieve much in their lives through learning new skills and developing healthy social relationships.

We welcome the public to our Wheelhouse Farm Shop & Coffee Bar where we offer quality home-produced organic food at affordable prices.

Residential opportunities

Our community members make their homes in five modern comfortable houses which have all been built since 1988. Our houses are spread across our farm, giving each household its own space without being crowded by others.
Our mix of community members, from young adults starting their working life to those who are enjoying their retirement, brings together a wide range of life experience, with each household member contributing to the support of their fellows and our community life.

Training, education and work opportunities

Through our partnership with the Whinstone Training Guild, training and work experience are available to all. Training is open-ended and tailored to individual needs - from basic communication skills to achieving qualifications with local colleges and trade associations.
Much of the training is based in our work places - our 160-acre mixed organic farm and horticultural unit; our organic butchers shop; our organic bakery; our textile and wooden toy craft workshops; S J Repairs vehicle maintenance workshop based at Larchfield; and our Wheelhouse Farm Shop & Coffee Bar.
We also run the Mill Rigg Organic Farm Shop at Stokesley, and are partners, through the Whinstone Training Guild, in Wholly Organic, a town centre cafe in Middlesbrough

Social and cultural activities

Our social, cultural and spiritual life involves our many local friends and includes celebration of the Christian festivals which provide important milestones through the year.
Our community hall hosts many different performances and there are enjoyable social events with our friends. Middlesbrough provides shopping and cinemas, and there is beautiful countryside and the sea nearby.
Many community members enjoy their involvement with Riding for the Disabled, whose stables are next door to Larchfield.
We welcome groups and school classes to visit and learn more about organic growing and our Community way of life, and to see for themselves the achievements of all at Larchfield.

Paulette's story

"THIS is me (on the left) in the Larchfield weavery where I taught Elisabeth a better way to cast on her knitting. She runs the weavery.
I came to live here 8 or 9 years ago from the Falkland Islands. I only started working in the weavery recently and I enjoy knitting there. I learnt to knit from my Aunty and I learnt to cast on this way when I was at school in the Falklands."
