With the advantage of having a Riding for the Disabled Unicorn Centre just over the back fence at Larchfield, Debbie Hewitt from Aspen House has had weekly lessons since coming to Larchfield in 2009. In that time Debbie has also been a student at the centre and is currently a supported volunteer one day a week.
In June Debbie found out that she had qualified for the National RDA Championships down at Hartpury College in Gloucestershire to ride in the Combined Training Class which involves two riding disciplines - the Countryside Challenge and a dressage class. Gloucestershire is quite a distance from Larchfield so some overnight accommodation was needed and Debbie and her support staff were given a warm welcome and some very comfortable beds at CVT Grange Village situated just half an hour from Hartpury.
After a good night's sleep and a hearty breakfast Debbie was at Hartpury for a 9am start and re-united with her ride for the day - a white pony called 'Tubby' (kindly loaned from Tunstall Farm, Stokesley). Debbie rode two excellent rounds in both the disciplines and, after a nerve-wracking wait in the afternoon, she found out that her combined scores had won her second place - an amazing achievement at national level.
