AT NEWTON DEE we are a community of around 200 people including 90 adults with special needs plus day opportunities for a further 15.
We are on the western outskirts of Aberdeen, so are part of the city yet in the countryside too. Our houses, workplaces, gardens and farms offer a supported, sheltered environment where men and women with learning disabilities and other special needs can make their home, participate in work and other activities, and enjoy a healthy social and cultural life.
Home environment
We offer a range of supported living environments which meet changing life needs. They include large and small shared houses in which the lives of those with special needs are interwoven with the lives of those who provide their support.
Where it is appropriate, we offer a more independent lifestyle in houses, flats or bedsitters in our community. Full support from experienced co-workers is always available, giving these members of the community the confidence to be more self reliant than would be possible in the wider community.
Daily work activities
Daily work is an important part of life, and everyone who is able is supported in work activities.
Our cafe, organic foodstore znd giftshop are popular with the public. Our bakery and confectionery teams are recognised by celebrity chef Rick Stein as ‘Food Heroes' Our craft workshops make wooden toys, hand beaten copperwork and unusual Christmas tree decorations. Our joinery provides training and work producing larger items while our craft studio supports and encourages people to gain and develop their craft skills.
Our organic farms and gardens grow vegetables, salad produce, fruit and flowers, and rear cattle, pigs sheep, poultry and produce milk on our 180 acres.
Social, cultural and spiritual life
Creative, artistic and spiritual themes run through our lives, and the celebration of the Christian festivals is included in many of our cultural and social activities.
We encourage and support everyone in developing their individual interests, and social and cultural activities build confidence and allow friendships to develop. Social activities can be informal, such as doing a jigsaw puzzle with friends, or more organised, such as involvement with music or drama in our hall, or an evening at the theatre, a concert or the cinema in Aberdeen. Our hall also hosts public performances by other groups and is a venue for the local arts festival.
