cvt communities | The Croft Community, Malton

The Croft community, based in the market town of Malton, North Yorkshire, supports adults with learning disabilities and other special needs in their home life, work, training and social and cultural activities, assisting their integration into town life.
As a mutually supportive community, our community members help each other in their daily lives, with those who are more able helping others by going shopping with them, assisting them in getting around the town, or accompanying them on longer journeys on days out or to and from holiday destinations.

Home life

For the 70 people of The Croft, half of whom have special needs, home life revolves around our six community houses in different areas of Malton, Norton and Old Malton. All have been refurbished or built to high standards and provide a comfortable and secure home environment.
They each have a different character ranging from a large Grade II listed Georgian townhouse to small modern cottage for those who are more independent with support co-workers living next door.
Everyone takes an active part in day-to-day home life, working together to get household chores done, and eating, socialising and relaxing together.

Work and Training opportunities

Work is central to adult life, and we have a varied programme to match differing needs and abilities, including training in our own work places or at local colleges. Where appropriate, community members are involved in outside employment or work experience.
Our Kingfisher Café, Gift and Bookshop provides work opportunities in all aspects of running a busy, modern, town-centre enterprise widely used by local people and visitors.
The Croft gardens include a large market garden growing fruit, vegetables and flowers.
We have craft workshops creating decorative items which are sold from our own shop and in other Camphill shops.
There's also work in our different offices and domestic work and meal preparation in our houses.

Social and cultural life

In addition to the social, cultural and spiritual activities of The Croft community, which include music, plays, celebration of the Christian festivals, dancing, and informal get-togethers, everyone is encouraged to take part in the social life of the town and the local area. Some pursue their interests with groups in the town, such as the ramblers and the operatic society. The shops, cafés and pubs of Malton are visited, and many like to take the bus or train to York, the seaside or elsewhere for days out.

Mark's story

"I came to The Croft as I wanted to live in a small market town and work in a cafe.
"In the cafe we're busy most of the time. I cook - making quiches and cakes - serve the tables and work on the till. We have lots of regular customers. They recognise me and I recognise them and know some of them by name."
"I like walking so I joined the ramblers club and most weekends I go out with them. Now I lead walks too.
"I also go to the Ryedale Leisure Club. Quite a lot of people from The Croft do and people from Scarborough and Pickering too. We play games and have various activities and there are annual theatre trips to Scarborough, and the pantomime in York, and a Christmas party. And I go to evening classes on Thursdays for arts and crafts."
